TW singer Lee Hom wows ’em at Genting concert

Wang Lee Hom won the hearts of fans in Lee Hom Live in Concert World Tour at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Friday, writes LI EE KEE.

All hail Wang Lee Hom, the first singer who truly blew me away with his musical talent. But don’t just take my word for it. Ask any of the 6,000 fans who were gathered at Arena of Stars, Genting Highlands, last Friday night and they would tell you the same thing.
What a brilliant, flawless show Wang put on. It was a culmination of months of preparation and hard work. I enjoyed every song that night, which he delivered from the heart. I watched wide-eyed as he moved effortlessly from playing the piano, electric keyboards to violin, drums and erhu.

I loved the fact that he had such a great time performing. Even his All Star Asian band members looked like they were having a blast.

The concert started promptly at 8.15pm with a clip of Wang’s past performances in countries such as Bangkok, Taipei and Singapore being shown on the five giant screens in the hall. Then, the large piece of white cloth hanging in the middle of the stage came down. Almost immediately fans erupted into a deafening roar when they saw their idol, decked out in white and wearing killer shades, suspended in mid-air and holding on to a rope. Their knight in shining armour had arrived in style.

Wang opened the show with a two-song rap medley (Ya Birthday and Open Your Heart) before launching into the up-tempo Love You = Love Me.

Four slow numbers followed – Revolution, You Are My Love, You Are Not Here and Forever Love – sending fans into another frenzy. Throughout the over two-hour show, it didn’t take much to get them screaming. In fact, their main mission that night was to holler “Lee Hom! Lee Hom! Lee Hom!”

Wang left the stage for the first of his six costume changes, which kept to basics – pants, shirts and sleeveless jackets.

As we waited, a recording of the girls from Taiwanese pop group S.H.E. was played. They had been tasked with working up the crowd. And they did such a hilarious job from commenting on how good looking Wang is to how his eyes could electrify the opposite sex. Each time fans shrieked the noise level was recorded on a mock resonance indicator, causing them to scream even louder.

Seizing on the crowd’s manic state, Wang reappeared and launched zealously into a hip hop medley segment. The versatile singer proved that while he is undisputed as a balladeer, he is also equally adept at playing the hip hop rapper. But there was more to come from this talented 29-year-old.

During his rendition of White Paper, stagehands brought out a piano, and fans who have been waiting in anticipation, became delirious. He rewarded them with the beautiful If You Hear My Song.

Next, drums were brought out, followed by the violin and erhu – all for the star of the night to showcase his multi talents.

Clearly, Wang is a bona fide talent, one that we rarely see in the Chinese music industry these days.

And you have to watch him perform live to truly appreciate his passion and love for music and performing. Having seen him in action, Wang is in a class of his own.
