Stars dazzle fans at Chinese music awards

KUALA LUMPUR: Glamour, suspense and loud cheers dominated the fifth Global Chinese Music Awards (GCMA) held at Putra Stadium in Bukit Jalil here last night.

Among the superstars who turned up for the event were Hong Kong singers Joey Yung, Eason Chan and Nicholas Tse, Taiwanese artistes Jolin Tsai and Wang Lee Hom and China’s Snow Wei and Wang Rong.

Also there were Singapore’s JJ Lim and Malaysia’s very own Penny Tai and Nicholas Teo.

All the stars were dressed to the nines and their fans turned up in full force to show their support.

A total of 18 awards were handed out to the artistes based on online voting by fans.

The five Most Popular Female Artistes were Gigi Leung, Fish Leong, Stephanie Sun, Tsai and Yung while the ultimate winner was Tsai.

"This is a great honour and I am glad to receive this award for two years running,” said Tsai.

Lu Yi, Jay Chou, Eason Chan, Wang and Hacken Lee shared the honours of being the five Most Popular Male Artistes, with Wang emerging as the ultimate winner.

“A big thank you to all fans of Chinese music out there,” said Wang, who added that he was grateful for the win especially as he had to compete against such great singers.

Another coveted title, Most Popular Newcomer, was shared by China’s Zhang Jie and Shi Wen Bin together with Malaysia's Teo.

Other winners for the night included Chan for Regional Best Performer Award for Hong Kong, Tsai for Best Dance Performance and JJ Lim for Most Popular Composer.

Some of the songs that made it to the Top 25 Hits include Tse’s Sai Che (Traffic Jam), Tai’s Ai Feng Le (Loving Till the Point of Madness) and Mayday’s Jue Jiang (Strong Will).
